In this lecture, Don addresses more than seven-thousand artists at Willow
Creek's annual arts conference, explaining the importance of the artists
role within the church.
Full description:
Expounding on the relationship between truth and meaning, Don discusses the need for art to speak to the entirety of a human being about the entirety of our human experience. He talks about God's ability, in scripture and in life, to communicate whole truths to whole people, creating sunsets and trees and poetry to elaborate spiritual truths to the three major parts of the human brain. As examples, Don speaks of creation, ancient Hebrew poetry, Shakespeare and paintings by Rembrandt to unfold how it is that a human being truly realizes ideas and is enabled to act on those ideas based on their artistic and wholistic explanation.
Artists who wonder if their work is futile will be encouraged by Don's exhortation to first understand the nature of truth and then explain that truth through beauty and meaning, allowing people to comprehend deeply the beauty of the God who created us.
